How Do You Repay the Lord's Goodness?
Scripture: Psalm 116:12-19
Sermon by: Pastor John Pattison
How can I repay the Lord for all his goodness to me?     I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the Lord.     I will fulfill my vows to the Lord in the presence of all his people.     Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.     O Lord, truly I am your servant; I am your servant, the son of your maidservant; you have freed me from my chains.     I will sacrifice a thank offering to you and call on the name of the Lord.     I will fulfill my vows to the Lord in the presence of all his people,     in the courts of the house of the Lord— in your midst, O Jerusalem. Praise the Lord. (Psalm 116:12-19 NIV84
•Salvation through Jesus
For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light  (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth)  and find out what pleases the Lord. (Ephesians 5:8-10 NIV84)
And God spoke all these words:     “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.     “You shall have no other gods before me.     “You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.  You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,  but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.     “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.     “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.  but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates.  For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.     “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.     “You shall not murder.     “You shall not commit adultery.     “You shall not steal.     “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.     “You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.” (Exodus 20:1-8, 10-17 NIV84)
•Praise God in front of everyone
Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. (2 Peter 1:4 NIV84)
I myself am convinced, my brothers, that you yourselves are full
of goodness, complete in knowledge and competent to instruct one another. (Romans 15:14 NIV84)
•Remember those who are suffering
Remember those in prison as if you were their fellow prisoners, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering. (Hebrews 13:3 NIV84)
•God has freed us through Jesus
Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.  So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. (John 8:35, 36 NIV84)
“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. (John 10:11 NIV84)
•Give thanks to God
Take a moment and try to count all of your blessings.
Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul.  Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us. (1 Peter 2:11, 12 NIV84)
